Is your Scout Group’s property and equipment properly insured?

Make sure you are getting the right cover for your Scout Group now, rather than when you need to make a claim.

Unity (Scout Insurance Services) suggests some of the main things you need to consider, when taking out an insurance policy for your Scout Group’s property and equipment.

  1. What is the cost of rebuilding your Scout hut, and when did you last get it valued?
  2. Do you hire out your Scout Hut to others?
  3. If your building was damaged, would you be able to pay for the use of alternative premises for your weekly meetings?
  4. Is your Group’s equipment insured at camp and when you are using it?
  5. Do you hire out or loan your Scout equipment to others?
  6. If you hire in or borrow equipment, does the owner’s insurance cover you using of them?
  7. Does your Scout Group own specialist items, such marine equipment, a minibus, other motor vechiles or a trailer?
  8. What are the excesses and restrictions on the policy?

1. What is the cost of rebuilding your Scout hut, and when did you last get it valued?

You should insure your building for the full cost of replacing it. Otherwise you may find that you are underinsured, and the claim will not pay out enough to replace your hut. It is recommended that you get your building valued every 3 years.

Help is at hand, Unity is partnered with IAS Chartered Loss Adjusters to provide an indication of rebuilding cost free of charge for anyone taking out the Scout Property & Equipment policy with us. The cost of arranging this type of estimation service yourself could cost your Group several hundred pounds.

2. Do you hire out your Scout Hut to others?

a) Would your building and equipment in it be covered if your tenants damaged them?

Under our Scout Property and Equipment policy, your buildings would be automatically covered when you hire out the building to others.

b) Would your Group suffer a loss of income, if the other groups could not use your premises?

If you rent out your Scout building to playgroups or other local groups, you may lose income whilst you wait for your building to be repaired. So instead of a healthy income, you could be facing a sizeable hole in your funds! You can protect your income by taking out loss of revenue insurance. You may need to consider cover for loss of rent receivable.

If you insure your Scout buildings under Unity’s Scout Property and Equipment policy, we can arrange for this to be added to your policy.

3. If your building was damaged, would you be able to pay for the use of alternative premises for your weekly meetings?

As well as the cost of repairing your Scout building, there could also be a cost in hiring or renting alternative premises, while your building is being repaired. Rather than increase your subs to pay for this, is it covered under your insurance?

If you insure your Scout buildings under Unity’s Scout Property and Equipment policy, you would be able to claim the additional rent you needed to pay, while your own building was unusable.

4. Is your Group’s equipment insured at camp and when you are using it?

You need to consider when and where your Group’s equipment needs to be insured.

For items such as camping equipment you may need to consider covering them when they are in storage, being taken to and from camp, at camp and when being used at camp. If not, a claim may not be paid for loss or damage to equipment at camp. Some general small business insurance policies may not cover camping equipment at camp, or even outside.

Unity’s Scout Property and Equipment policy automatically covers your equipment at camp in the UK, when you’re using it and even when it’s unattended at camp.

Unity knows it isn’t much fun camping inside; other insurance policies might not!

5. Do you hire out or loan your Scout equipment to others?

Identify those items that you hire out and to whom, such as other Scout Groups, Girlguiding Units or other organisations. Whether you hire out your Scout building to a local playgroup or tents to the district Explorer Unit, you will need to make sure that your insurance policy covers this.

Unity’s Scout Property and Equipment insurance policy has the flexibility to cover your Group’s equipment as contents (for loss or damage whilst in transit, and camping equipment in use within the UK) or wider cover under an All Risks option (cover for equipment loaned out to other Scout Groups or Girlguiding Units and European cover as standard on all equipment).

6. If you hire in or borrow equipment, does the owner’s insurance cover you using of them?

If your Group borrows equipment and it is damaged, you would need to reimburse the owner from Group funds, if you were not insured. You should consider insuring these on a short term basis, if the owner’s insurance does not cover you using of them?

As well as annual cover, don’t forget Unity can also arrange short period cover for items belonging to other people, which you may hire in or borrow.

7. Does your Scout Group own specialist items, such marine equipment, a minibus, other motor vechiles or a trailer?

Some items that your Scout Groups owns may need specialist insurance, and cannot be covered under general equipment policies.

Our Scout Marine insurance policy can cover loss and damage to boats and watercraft, anything from a surfboard to a dinghy or safety boat.

Our Scout Minibus and Scout miscellaneous motor polices can cover the vehicles you own or hire.

Our Scout Trailer Insurance can cover against all risks of loss or damage (including road risks). It can also cover can include trailers that you hire or borrow.

8. What are the excesses and restrictions on the policy?

Insurance excess is the amount you would have to pay towards a claim. This can vary between different insurance policies, and would affect the amount you would need pay out of your Group funds, if you had to replace your insured items. Unity’s Scout Property and Equipment policy has been designed with low excesses in mind.
